Is it true that a Christian will lose their zeal for the Lord as they grow older in Him? Is passion only for the newborn believer, but as the years roll by, should we anticipate a growing apathy and indifference? Sadly, this seems to be what many are willing to accept as normal. But is it Biblical?

Doesn’t scripture liken the Christian life to running a race? If you’ve ever run in a race or watched one, you know, runners don’t slow down as they near the finish line they speed up. Every muscle being utilized as they agonize to lunge across that tape.

I’m starting to find more and more gray in my hair. Should I start planning my spiritual retirement? Start looking for a place to hang up my cleats? Do forty years in the Lord allow me to string up a hammock and watch others run? Maybe it’s just me, but that doesn’t sound like running a race to win. (1 Cor. 9:24)

It doesn’t sound like the way Paul ran.

2 Ti 4:7 (ESV) I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

I like what one writer said. “Do you want to know if your mission is finished? If you're still breathing, it isn’t.”

Have you somehow convinced yourself it’s OK to coast? The truth is you can only coast downhill, away from the Lord.  Perhaps it’s time for you to tie on the cleats and get back in the race. To be sitting when you should be running may be typical, but it is not Biblical.

Phil 3:13-14 (NLT)  No, dear friends, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, (14) I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven.
